The best beaches of the Balearic Islands

Table of contents

If you’re thinking of heading to Spain’s Balearic Islands this summer, it’s probably in search of sea, sand and sun. This small group of islands made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera is home to some of the best white sandy beaches in the Mediterranean. The Balearics are the choice of many Europeans who like to sail with family or friends, for their wide variety of activities, unbeatable climate, gourmet food and dreamy, crystal-clear beaches. Let’s take a look at the best beaches in the Balearic Islands:

SES ILLETES, FORMENTERA

ses illetes formentera

Ses Illetes is located within the Ses Salines Natural Park of Ibiza and Formentera, occupying a large area of the Es Trucadors peninsula, located at the northern tip of the island of Formentera. It stretches over 450 metres of beach divided into two parts by a small rocky area in the centre. The name Ses Illetes refers to several islets that lie off this stretch of coastline, which make the landscape unique. However, the most outstanding feature of this paradisiacal beach is its white sand, extremely calm and shallow waters of a turquoise colour that will not leave you indifferent. As it is a natural park, the environment is very well cared for.

CALA VARQUES, MALLORCA

cala varques mallorca

Cala Varques is a well-known and spectacular sandy beach located in the municipality of Manacor. It is located in a reserved and privileged environment with an abundance of pine trees, rock formations, white sand, crystal clear waters… This beach is located in the middle of nature, far from any construction, in fact the nearest housing developments are several kilometres away. The quickest and easiest access is by boat, although you can also walk through the forest to find this little piece of paradise. We can assure you that the effort is worth it, and you cannot leave Mallorca without visiting one of its most precious and spectacular coves.

SA CALOBRA, MALLORCA

sa calobra mallorca

Sa Calobra, one of the most beautiful and well-known secret beaches in the Balearic Islands, is hidden at the end of a gorge, deep in the Tramuntana Mountains of Mallorca. Those who like adventure can enjoy a variety of excursions in the area – you won’t regret it! For everyone else, there are many boat excursions from nearby resorts, mainly from Sóller, that allow you to enjoy this marvel that has nothing to envy to the Caribbean.
The only drawback you will find in the high season (July and August) is that the beach is very crowded. We recommend going out of season or by private boat to enjoy the beach away from the crowds.

CALA COMTE, IBIZA

cala comte ibiza

Cala Comte is another famous beach known for its dramatic rock formations, sandy seabed and crystal clear waters. Its distinctive geography makes it one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, especially if you can visit it out of season (September to May) as it tends to get crowded in summer. Cala Comte is also known for offering one of the most beautiful and magical sunsets.
The coastline on which Cala Comte is located also hides the odd monument that is worth a visit when the heat is less intense.

CALA CODOLAR, IBIZA

If what you are looking for is a more secluded beach surrounded by cliffs and nature, Cala Colordar is the place you are looking for. Its golden and slightly grainy sand, its calm and relaxed atmosphere, its crystal clear waters make it another perfect destination to disconnect and enjoy the small pleasures. In addition to the spectacular beach in its surroundings you can find several caves, a multitude of rock formations to practice climbing and infinite places to jump into the sea from great heights.

ES GRAU, MENORCA

Es Grau is the perfect place for wildlife and nature lovers. This beach is characterised by its curious shell shape and is bordered by a string of sand dunes and pine groves that lead to the Natural Park of s’Albufera des Grau. To reach this beach it is necessary to walk or go by boat, but along the way you will be able to see more than 100 species of birds and other animals characteristic of the island. Its warm, shallow waters are ideal for snorkelling and for disconnecting from everyday life.

CALÓ BLANC, MENORCA

Es Caló Blanc is one of the smallest and most spectacular secret beaches in Menorca. And, although it is characterised by its rocky sand, its turquoise and crystalline water is out of this world. There are few beaches in Menorca with such beautiful colours. It is not your typical sandy beach, but rather a rocky cliff with flat surfaces where you can lay your towel and lie down, as well as jumping off the cliffs into the deep blue water.

Now that we have revealed the secret of the best beaches in the Balearic Islands, we recommend you to go out by boat and go all around the archipelago in order to discover places that are only accessible by boat. Wherever you go, you will almost always find fine sand, turquoise water of an almost unbelievable hue and a unique and characteristic landscape. It is not surprising then that many of the beaches of the Balearic Islands are often compared to the beaches of the Caribbean.
