Many people believe that navigating a boat requires obtaining a complex license and passing demanding exams. However, the reality is that there are much simpler options for those who want to start sailing without major complications. The easiest and quickest way to do this is through the “titulín”, an accessible certification that allows you to enjoy the sea without lengthy procedures or extensive training.
If you are thinking of discovering the freedom of sailing in the Mediterranean, at Motyvel we provide you with all the essential information about the titulín, from what it is, how to obtain it, how much it costs, to which boats you can operate with it. Let’s start the adventure!
What is the titulín?
The term titulín has been colloquially used for many years to refer to the federation authorization that allowed the operation of small recreational boats. It was not an official nautical title, but a document issued by the Spanish Motorboating Federation.
Over time and with changes in regulations, this authorization became obsolete. In 2014, Royal Decree 875/2014 introduced significant changes in the regulation of nautical certifications in Spain. As a result, the titulín was replaced by a new certification called the Navigation License, which maintains the philosophy of being a fast and simple way to start recreational boating, but with the backing of the maritime administration and a minimum required training.
Although the titulín no longer has legal validity as a document itself, the term is still commonly used to refer to the Navigation License.
Which boats can be operated with the Navigation License?
With this certification, you can operate recreational boats up to six meters in length, as long as they are not intended for commercial purposes. Additionally, it authorizes the use of Class C jet skis, which include models with a maximum power of fifty-five horsepower.
An important limitation to keep in mind is the maximum navigation distance, which is two nautical miles from the nearest port, marina, or sheltered area. This means that the titulín is mainly intended for coastal navigation, avoiding areas farther offshore where sea conditions may become challenging. It is also mandatory to navigate during daylight and in favorable weather conditions, which excludes night sailing or adverse conditions such as storms or rough seas.
The titulín is ideal for those renting boats in tourist areas such as the Costa Brava, Balearic Islands, or the Andalusian coast, as it provides a practical way to start sailing without committing to purchasing a boat right away.
How to obtain the new titulín?
First, keep in mind that the minimum required age is eighteen years. Additionally, it is essential to present a medical certificate and complete a two-hour theoretical course. During this part of the course, students receive an introduction to the content that will later be developed in the practical sessions. The theoretical training covers fundamental safety and regulatory aspects, such as navigation limitations near beaches, port rules, and maritime traffic regulations.
Another key component is the introduction to the basic use of a portable VHF radio. Students learn about Channel 16, its function in emergencies, and guidelines for routine communications. For the practical part, a minimum of four hours of sailing under navigation conditions is required. During this time, comprehensive training is provided on safety and basic vessel control. The course includes knowledge and handling of onboard safety equipment, inspection of critical points of the boat, and pre-departure checks.
Training continues with practical exercises for docking and undocking, as well as proper management of safe speed within the marina. Anchoring and retrieving the anchor are practiced, emphasizing precautions near swimmers or divers. Finally, essential safety maneuvers are practiced to respond effectively to any unforeseen situation at sea.
But where can you obtain the certification? You can get it through the Sailing and Motorboating Federations and recreational nautical schools.
How much does it cost to get the boat license or titulín?
The cost of obtaining the titulín varies slightly depending on the nautical school, geographic area, and services included. Generally, the price ranges from €60 to €150. The official fee is €38.9, which must be paid through Form 790 for Professional and Recreational Maritime Titles on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility website.
How to renew the titulín?
The titulín does not require renewal, as it has no expiration date. However, the Spanish vessel registration certificate or navigation permit must be renewed periodically. This is a mandatory document that certifies that the vessel complies with all legal requirements for navigation.
The certificate is valid for five years and it is the owner’s responsibility to manage it on time. To avoid interruptions, it is recommended to start the renewal process at least three months before the expiration date. Although it does not directly affect the personal validity of the titulín, it is a key aspect for continuing to sail legally.
Frequently asked questions about the titulín
What is the validity of the titulín?
As mentioned earlier, the Navigation License does not expire and is only valid within Spanish territory. It is not valid for international waters or other countries, where different or more advanced licenses may be required.
What is the difference between a titulín and a PNB?
The PNB allows you to operate larger boats, up to eight meters in length, and navigate up to five miles from the coast. It also allows you to sail sailboats if the additional training is completed. In contrast, the titulín is limited to six meters and two miles.
How long does it take to get the titulín?
It only takes one day. With a six-hour session split between theory and practice, anyone can leave with their license in hand, provided they present a valid medical certificate.
